New Findings in Publishing Bilingual Children’s Books
When it comes to picking out books for your kids, you’re probably running through a list of common questions.
- Are the pictures colorful, entertaining, playful?
- Would my kid enjoy these themes? (i.e animals, cars, fairy tales)
- Would this book hold up in a fight with a mouthy toddler? (aka is it durable?)
- How easy is it to pack up and take with me?
- Is this book at their reading level?
It’s rare that parents walk into a bookstore with the intention of selecting one specific author (though we have our favorites) or a select title.
For small publishers of children’s bilingual books, understanding how families interact with stories is essential to creating titles that draw young readers into the world of books for life. With BookSpring Originals, our mission is to develop high-quality bilingual children’s books that support early literacy, joyful read-aloud experiences, and culturally responsive storytelling for families in both English and Spanish.
On May 5, 2026, BookSpring Originals hosted its first focus group to gather feedback on book quality, content, read-aloud
effectiveness, and overall first impressions. The focus group included eight bilingual and Spanish-speaking families who explored a mix of BookSpring Originals titles alongside comparable paperback bilingual books. Families were not told which books were produced by BookSpring Originals, allowing for more natural and unbiased feedback.
BookSpring Originals Titles included:
● Dance, Little Mermaid ● Opposites ● Animal Adventure in the West ● ABC Geometry! ● Kevin the Dancing Frog ● The Elephant at Aisha’s Birthday ● Ready for School ● The Little Mushroom Village
One of the clearest takeaways was the importance of strong visual design. Covers featuring bright colors, animals, insects, and fantasy elements immediately attracted children’s attention. Dance, Little Mermaid! became an early favorite, with four families reading it simultaneously during the session.
Notable Observations:
Several titles stood out during the session:
- Ready for School showed particularly strong read-aloud engagement.
- Dance, Little Mermaid resonated with older preschool readers.
- ABC Geometry! surprised with broad appeal across multiple age groups, likely due to its visual accessibility and simple bilingual presentation.
Perhaps most meaningful was the families’ positive response upon learning the books were created locally in Austin. The community connection increased both perceived value and recommendation potential, reinforcing the importance of locally driven literacy initiatives and culturally relevant children’s publishing.
For independent publishers of bilingual children’s books, this focus group reaffirmed something important: families are looking for stories that are engaging, accessible, visually inviting, and rooted in authentic community connection.
