Book People, Austin Allies, AISD, and BookSpring are kicking off the summer reading season! Join the First Zilker Theatre Productions’ cast of this summer’s musical, The Wizard of Oz, for a special storytime and oz-themed costume contest at 11:30 am at Book People, located at 603 N Lamar Blvd.
Together we are promoting the importance of children reading over the summer. Through the AISD’s 5 Book Dive program, students are encouraged to read at least five self-selected books over the summer. AISD librarians and BookSpring staff will be at the event to provide some fun recommendations!
Austin Allies, a volunteer group for local families, will talk about how families can support literacy in Austin.
Summer reading is crucial in curbing the summer slide. The dip in a student’s academic and reading skills can be prevented by helping build home libraries one book at a time.
We want to encourage families to take the 5 Book Dive challenge, while investing in the community – buy one, give one! All donations will go to children in Central Texas with little to no books in the home. As few as 20 books in a home can have a tremendous impact on a child’s future social, emotional, and academic success.
Through the BookSpringGo summer programs, children at the Housing Authority City of Austin, Child INC, and Austin Independent School District will benefit greatly from these books.
