Floating Boats for 3-5 year olds

It was by boats that people first traveled across the oceans between the continents. Some of the best boats are the ones that float on lakes or even in bathtubs!  Let’s learn more about boats this week.

Watch videos, download books to read together, and explore things to do with BookSpring.

  • What would your boat carry?

El Barco de Papel

  • Where did Sanju let go of his paper boat?
  • Who picked up the boat?
  • Have you made a paper boat?

Viaje En Bote

  • What are some animals that Vikki and Kato saw while they were on the boat?
  • How did Kato fall in the water?
  • What would you do if you were in Vikki’s position?

El Paseo En El Rio

Things to do Together

Here are some great activities to try with the whole family.

  1. Clean a styrofoam tray, push a straw into the middle of it and create a paper sail (cut a diamond, then fold it in half and glue it together with the straw in between). How well does your boat sail? What can you do to help it move faster (blow on the sail)?
  2. Why do boats float? Do some experimenting – collect a few objects and test them to see whether they will float or sink. Encourage your child to predict before you test each item. What do the things that float have in common?

Share Together

At the end of the week, reflect on what you read and what you did.

  • I learned that …….. will float.
  • I learned that …… will sink.
  • Was there something that you expected would float and were surprised to find it sank?
