Exploring the Science and Future of Literacy: “Pathways to a Love of Reading”

Celebrating “Pathways to a Love of Reading”

On October 9th, we came together at the Austin Central Library with long-time supporters, educators, local partners,  and valued community members to celebrate and learn about the future and science of literacy! “Pathways to a Love of Reading” was an uplifting afternoon meant to highlight BookSpring’s clear path forward for the next five years, showcase the scientific importance of reading aloud at key development stages, outline the telling results from our annual Texas Reading survey, and ultimately recommit to the families we serve every day.

Together, we raised over $100,000, including matches by the Andrew Delaney Foundation, for our year-round programs!

Reading Aloud and the Developing Brain

Our guest speaker, Dr. John Hutton, pediatrician, researcher, and author, delivered an illuminating presentation on how reading aloud shapes young minds. Drawing on his groundbreaking research, Dr. Hutton shared that a strong home reading environment activates brain regions critical for narrative comprehension and mental imagery in preschoolers. He explained that reading aloud builds neural connections that support cognitive development, empathy, and lifelong learning. Dr. Hutton shared key insights into how reading frequency, story format, child interest, interactivity, and access to books all play essential roles in building early literacy skills.

Later, Dr. Ana Aguilar presented our early findings from this year’s Texas Reading Survey. Encouragingly, the presence of print books in the home continues to rise, while digital reading saw a slight decline but remains a meaningful tool for many families. Across both English and Spanish-speaking households, 92% of parents agreed that reading is important for their children, a powerful testament to our community’s shared belief in the lifelong value of literacy. Keep an eye out for the full analysis later this fall.

Our Five-Year Strategic Plan

BookSpring is committed to nurturing these literacy hubs, whether in the home, at school, or in the community. Our programs exist to ensure that children have access to books wherever they are. As we reflect on this gathering and the future of BookSpring, we are also excited to share BookSpring’s strategic plan for 2025–2030, which charts a clear path forward to expand literacy access across Central Texas. We are committing to reaching more children, supporting educators and families, and ensuring that every child in Central Texas has a strong foundation for success through literacy.
