BookSpring remembers and honors Mindy Gomillion, a visionary leader whose dedication helped shape the organization into a stronger, more effective force for children’s literacy in Central Texas. She passed away March 17, 2026 surrounded by family and is much missed by all who knew her.

Mindy served as Executive Director of Capital Area Reach Out and Read and then BookSpring during a pivotal time in the organization’s history. She helped lead the merger of two former literacy organizations, guided the branding and strategic planning process, and positioned BookSpring to increase the effectiveness of its programs and deepen its neighborhood-level partnerships. Under her leadership, BookSpring grew into a valuable community service provider, reaching tens of thousands of children and parents with early literacy programs and engaging more than 1,100 volunteers.

Mindy brought to BookSpring a rare combination of business insight, creative thinking, and deep compassion for children and families. Before her nonprofit leadership, she spent 11 years in advertising and became a principal at what was then the largest advertising design firm in San Antonio. She later earned her MBA from St. Edward’s University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and carried into her work a strong belief in strategic planning, organizational development, and the power of helping create the future rather than merely reacting to it.

Her commitment to children extended far beyond her professional roles. While raising her own children, Mindy devoted her time and leadership to community efforts focused on children’s welfare. She created an environmental program and children’s garden at an elementary school, served as a docent and educational consultant at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, edited the Austin Area Homeschoolers newsletter, organized a career fair, and served on the Board of Reading Is Fundamental of Austin.

Mindy believed deeply that literacy is essential to reducing poverty and inequality, empowering individuals and communities, and sustaining democratic society. That belief continues to live on in BookSpring’s mission and in the many children, families, volunteers, partners, and staff members touched by the work she helped build.

We are grateful for Mindy’s leadership, imagination, and steadfast commitment to a more literate and hopeful future. Her legacy remains part of BookSpring’s story and continues to inspire our work every day.
