Texas Ranks 50th in Family Reading: A Call to Action

Here at BookSpring, we’re all about big dreams and even bigger hearts. But there’s one statistic that hits close to home and demands our attention: Texas ranks 50th in the nation for the percentage of children under age six whose families read to them every day. In a state known for its pride and resilience, we’re falling short where it matters most ? in nurturing the minds and hearts of our youngest citizens.

Facing the Challenges: A Startling Reality

Graphic demonstrating lack of families readingThe latest data from the Texans Care for Children’s School Readiness Dashboard paints a stark picture of the obstacles families across Texas face. Poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to quality early childhood education are all too common. With 1 in 3 Texas children under age 6 living in or near poverty and 1 in 12 households with young children experiencing hunger, these aren’t just numbers; they’re the daily struggles of families trying to provide for their children’s needs while nurturing their growth.  When it comes to policies that promote positive family-child interactions, we must work together to improve this situation.

BookSpring: A Beacon of Hope

In the midst of these challenges, organizations like BookSpring stand as beacons of hope. We’re not just about distributing books; we’re empowering families and communities to foster a love of reading from an early age. Our mission is clear: to ensure that every child, especially those in economically distressed areas, has equal access to the tools they need for academic and life success ? reading readiness, parental engagement, and book access.

Empowering Families, Transforming Lives

Our approach to literacy is multifaceted. From in-person book distribution events to delivering high-quality print books directly to children every six months, we’re committed to providing resources that make a difference. But perhaps most importantly, we prioritize ongoing communication with parents and caregivers, recognizing them as crucial partners in their children’s literacy journey. Starting in April of 2022, the year after this data was collected, BookSpring began a program aimed directly at increasing family reading time at home. With over 20,000 children currently enrolled in this five year program, we’re aiming to move the needle on this troubling statistic.

Tangible Impact, Profound Results

The impact of our programs is tangible and profound. Surveys show that 81% of participating children in our Central Texas programs exhibit a very high interest in reading after participating in distribution events, and an overwhelming 97% of parents report reading with their child at least once daily. And, our family reading program, Books Beginning from Birth, is showing significant increases in key literacy markers for kindergarten readiness and parent engagement. These numbers underscore the vital role that parental engagement plays in promoting early literacy and setting children on a path to success.

Challenges Ahead, Opportunities to Rise

Despite our successes, BookSpring faces significant challenges. The demand for our program far exceeds available funding, and literacy gaps continue to widen in low-income and rural regions of Texas. But with your support, we can rise to the occasion and make an even greater impact. Our statewide program supports family reading with children from birth through age 5, a key time when young brains and hearts are most receptive to language and storytelling.

Join Us in the Journey

As we confront these challenges head-on, we need your help. Together, we can ensure that every child in Texas has the opportunity to discover the joy of reading and the power of knowledge. Whether you’re a policymaker, philanthropist, educator, or community member, your support is vital to turning our vision into reality. Consider contributing your time, money, books, or stories  to BookSpring or you local book access program today.

A Commitment to Early Literacy

In a state where everything is bigger, let’s make our commitment to early literacy just as immense. Let’s rewrite the narrative and propel Texas forward as a leader in childhood literacy. Every child’s story deserves to be told ? and it starts with a book in their hands and a parent by their side.

Join us in this mission to gift children with the transformative power of literacy. You can be the author of success who makes every child’s story count
