‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

Adapted from the classic poem by Clement C. Moore,
excerpts borrowed from David Davis, Librarian’s Night Before Christmas.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the stacks
librarian’s were fretting about budget cutbacks.
Doctors and nurses, physicians assistants too,
Were wondering what in the world they would do.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Dr. Seuss danced in their heads;
And Joan in her ‘kerchief, with all of the staffers
would hunt down the books with the pictures and chapters.

What happened next didn’t seem to be real
‘Cause out of the sky cruised a red bookmobile!
Up to the front ramp flew a literary ride,
With a picture of Clifford, airbrushed on the side.

Someone exclaimed “I’ll fill up their shelves!”
Then a door opened up, and out popped six elves.
They laughed with delight as they unloaded a crate,
And hung holiday wreaths on our new chain link gate.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
Then out of that crate to our eyes did appear,
Books by the dozen, the ones that are dear.

“Now, ARTHUR! now, BISCUIT! now, WINNIE and DIEGO!
On, SPIDERMAN! on BABY MOUSE! on, DORA the EXPLORER!
They filled up the shelves with the Pigeon and more –
They even arranged them in ABC order!

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work.
He filled all the shelves; then turned with a jerk,
Nick winked at us all as he dashed down the aisles
And yelled, “Happy Reading, you bibliophiles!”

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!
